Storage Hacks

When you have 7 people confined to a space the size of a motorhome, storage becomes a hot commodity. Here are some things I do to maximize the space we have.

I have four over the door hanging shoe holders with 12-24 pockets each. I keep one in the bathroom over the outside wall of the shower. Each kid has their own pocket for their toothbrush, hair ties, make-up, razor, etc. It also holds group toiletries such as toothpaste, lotion, hair brushes, Q-tips, feminine hygiene products, etc.  I have one on the outside of the bathroom door, which is near the kitchen. I use that to store utensils, scissors, tape, storage bags, foil, etc. I have one on the inside door of my closet for things like sunscreen, bug spray, meds, and shoes. The last one is on the back of the bedroom door. That one is for our water shoes, flip flops, and some random odds and ends.

Instead of storing plates stacked on each other in the cupboards, I bought plastic magazine holders and put the plates in there vertically. I did this with both the paper plates and our “real” plates. You could use baskets for the same thing. Everything is in bins and therefore doesn’t slide around as we drive.

Velcro is to RVs as duct tape is to houses. Most of the stuff I use for storage, I get right from the Dollar Store. I put velrco on the tv remotes and a strip on the wall so the remotes don’t get lost or thrown around. You can also use velcro to hold other stuff up on a wall or outside of a cupboard door, such as light weight spice racks or hooks for dishtowels and oven mitts.

Seat back storage, often used in cars behind the driver’s seat or passenger seat to keep kid’s stuff, can also be used on the back of motorhome seats. It’s a great place to keep maps, notebooks, books, and pens.

Bungee cords come in handy as well, they’re right up there with velcro. I bought a container of multiple sizes off Amazon very inexpensively. You can use them to hang stuff to dry like kitchen towels or a bathing suit without needing to hang towel racks on precious wall space. The larger ones can be used as clothes lines outside. I use the small ones to bundle hoses and cords together when they aren’t in use. You can also use them to hold paper towels or a roll of garbage bags.

At home, I use a large Rubbermaid bin for the kids outdoor toys. For the Rav, I put their balls and frisbees and outdoor stuff in a net laundry bag. That way, they can easily be hosed off if they’re dirty, sand and dry dirt can be shaken right out, and it takes up less room.

      1. You will have so much fun! By the time the date rolls around it will be whatever we have, we have and the rest we can do without or buy.
