Getting smoother

I definitely didn’t mean for it to take this long to post but we’ve been super busy and then have been without internet for the past few days. That first week on the road was a lot of lessons, some more frustrating than others. We got through them and I’m feeling like I might actually know what I’m doing now. Last night I even discovered what the last of the mystery switches went to. There were three unlabeled switches right by the door that kept me guessing, one goes to the ceiling lights, one to the led lights on the awning, and the third to an outdoor light by the door.

We went to Cedar Point on Friday, which lives up to all the hype and I’ll review it completely in another post. On Saturday, we spent some time in Toledo running errands that we’re finally caught up on and then headed into Michigan. We spent the night in Frankenmuth before heading up to Mackinaw City on Sunday.

If you’ve never heard of Frankenmuth, Michigan, you aren’t alone. I first became aware of it last year and knew I had to make a stop there on this trip. I was giddy. Frankenmuth is this adorable little town that makes you believe you’re in Bavaria. Everything is German; German buildings, German restaurants, traditional German clothing worn by employees, German signs. It reminded me of my time in the Alps. There are horse drawn carriage rides in the streets and, being a tourist town, everybody is happy and friendly. It’s seriously like a movie setting, so perfect. As if that’s not perfect enough, sit down, there’s more… Frankenmuth is the location of Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland, the largest Christmas store in the world. You get handed a map when you walk in the door and walk into Christmas over load. They have every ornament known to man. They also carry Christmas decorations, books, toys, puzzles, trees, miniature villages, and Santa suits. There’s a dining area where they serve hot cocoa and Christmas cookies. There are 2 miles of light displays you can drive through in the parking lots while listening to the Christmas music playing on outdoor speakers. Even in August, it puts you in the Christmas spirit.

Mackinaw City is a great little coastal town. We didn’t go over to the island, but the main land was beautiful. We went down to the park at the end of the bridge and walked in Lake Huron on the beach where Lake Michigan and Lake Huron come together. We went into town for dinner and shopping. Walking outside through the maze of specialty shops and souvenir stores, we were entertained by a magician, live music, and other street performers. We ended our time there getting fudge, for which they’re known.

We’re heading back into civilization later from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula today and should have internet. I’ll post again real soon on our time in the UP and a complete review of Cedar Point. So come back again soon!
